Summary: I became very aware of my American biases based on my first impression. But I quickly found out what a beautiful authentically Japanese experience this was.
It’s hard to get there, but if you find the right bus line, you can get from Fukuyama station all the way up to the national park. The property is older and a bit dated, but it just feels historical to me.

Summary: I really loved this retro hotel on top of the mountainside. I had the mysterious looking onsen all to myself several times around 9-10 pm and it was so cool. The view is amazing and the food was very good. Just know that you are really in the countryside and to get to Onomichi it is going to take at least an hour using public transit. Taxis are available as long as you are willing to spend a little money. The staff were very friendly and helpful. I used this hotel as my home base while doing the Shimanami Kaido and it was nice to come "home" to a hot meal and hot onsen after a full day of biking.

Summary: The property has views of both sea views of Innoshima depending on which side of the hotel your room is on. Both are equally beautiful.
Order your lunch or dinner in advance at the front desk; the sashimi here is as fresh as it gets and the restaurant has beautiful sea views also.
I didn't get to try the sauna/baths, but I will be sure to do so next time I stay.
I highly recommend Hotel Innoshima if you have a car to get here. If you are travelling the shimanami kaido by bicycle, it would be quite tiring to access this hotel, unless you are a seasoned athlete. It is high up a long, steep winding road.
Thanks to all the wonderful Hotel Innoshima staff for an enjoyable stay.

Summary: The view from our room was spectacular! The staff were so helpful and kind even though we speak no Japanese. While the rooms may not be 5 star, I would definitely stay here again. A very enjoyable stay.
