Melvin Cottage Reviews

Travel Purpose: leisure
Positive: Melvin Cottage is in a beautiful location with fine views from the rear of the property. Access to the coast path and beach is within a couple of hundred metres. The property is comfortably furnished and well-equipped and was clean and tidy when we arrived. The bathroom has an electric over-bath shower with a further shower handset, both of which were more than adequate, together with a heated towel rail. Tea-towels and hand-towels are provided. The host provides contact details and responded rapidly to our enquiries.
Negative: The main heating system for the property is comprised of electric storage radiators. We were at Melvin in late March, and the property was comfortably warm throughout the day but was cool at night. There is an open fireplace in the living area, but it would have been good to have other supplementary heating. The shower was fine, but a grab rail or handle would make it easier to get over the side of the bath.
Summary: A very enjoyable stay in a wonderful location.

Positive: It is a fantastic location above the beach and very close to the amazing Ship Inn.
We've seen reviews about the "poor" heating. As we don't have central heating at home, we were absolutely fine, and we noticed that a new shower and towel rail fitted.
Negative: Unfortunately, the previous visitors hadn't cleaned up the dog fouling in the rear garden or cleared the hearth of ashes, which were overflowing the fireplace. We couldn't locate the 'cooling off' bucket for the ashes?
Summary: Fantastic views from a cottage in an idyllic location.

Positive: Location excellent very close to beach.
Liked having an open fire.
Beds comfortable. Kitchen well fitted out.
Negative: Was cold if relied on storage heaters and didn't light the open fire.
Decor was old fashioned and furniture mis matched.
Note left for us to only use the electric shower if absolutely necessary.
Summary: Proximity to beach was excellent but cottage not good value for cost.

Perfect location close to a beautiful beach with lovely pubs within walking distance. Very friendly helpful owner who went out of her way to ensure we enjoyed our stay including bringing treats for our dog!
Negative:
Nothing major. Slightly dated decor but it’s a holiday let and it was perfectly adequate. The storage heaters provide some warmth but there was an oil filled radiator and an open fire so it wasn’t an issue.
Summary: Lovely location for a stay in Northumberland
