The Cross Keys | Hotel in Saffron Walden

I booked the hotel for my birthday but could not have my birthday meal at the Hotel as the latest I could book a table was 5PM only 1 hour after the 4pm check in time. I decided to take a bath. The water pressure in the room was awful and the cold just dribbled out it took about 45 minutes to run a 1/2 bath. We had a drink before going out and I must say it was about the most expensive drink we have ever had in a hotel. We arrived back at the hotel early around 9pm and the bar was already closed so we had to drink our own drinks from the room. We had breakfast in the morning and was served by Wendy. She was absolutely amazing and a credit to the company. The breakfast itself was fantastic and of a very high standard. In the evening we went to the bar at 8:45PM and tried to pay cash but was informed the till had been cashed up as they were about to close at 9PM again. For a hotel in summer was such a surprise the early closing times especially as online google advises Sunday 10pm and Monday 11pm close. We ordered a drink and found there was a vast difference in the advertised price on the drinks menu and what the till said also we were advised the price includes a service charge which unless you ask for a printed bill before paying you would never know, this could be why our drinks were so expensive last night. We were served by Yasmin who we explained all our frustrations to and she gave us our drinks and a bottle of wine complimentary to say sorry which we accepted.

Rooms ok, bit dusty. Beds comfy. But unable to open windows on a very hot night. Tried to help by providing fans helped a little Staff really nice & helpful.

Lovely Quirky Hotel in the centre of Town. Very helpful staff & a fantastic free all English Breakfast. Can’t wait to stay again soon.

Stayed 2 nights during a heatwave, so the Aircon was a godsend. Room was clean but not easily accessible, having to climb an outdoor spiral staircase with suitcases. My wife was not keen on the open plan layout in the room. Although a screen was provided for around the bath/shower. Water pressure was not great. Breakfast was good with plenty of choice. Nice location, being right in the centre. Parking was at a local carpark, approx 6 mins walk away.

Amazing Hotel, Right in heart of town and to local market and shops. Lots of History and staff was amazing. Singing Wendy during a full English breakfast was most enjoyable

Great little overnight stay in my home town but visiting with my husband from Ireland for a funeral. Room was lovely, great coffee machine and modern en suite. Breakfast options looked amazing but we had to leave early to get to London so just enjoyed the cereal and croissants and coffee to go.☺️

Wonderful place to stay, full of character and olde world charm. Great value meal in the restaurant downstairs on a Thursday evening, accommodating dietary needs including gluten free. The breakfast was delicious and exceedingly generous. Saffron Walden is an attractive small town with pretty buildings, history and green space.

Very nice place, definitely had character

A really superb hotel that was fantastic value for money. We had a Superior Double room that was spacious and very comfortable. Excellent en-suite with very good toiletries and motion sensor lighting. Even the toilet roll was top quality, something that many chains get wrong. The breakfast was outstanding and all staff were very friendly. Only thing to note is that it's a very old building on a busy road, so there is some traffic noise, but we're not light sleepers, so not a problem for us.

Wonderful staff, excellent breakfast! Great location but no parking because it’s an old historic building. Room was spacious with a huge clawfoot bath and walk-in shower. Room was not warm enough for us (winter) but the fan heater helped. We enjoyed the stay
