The Elephant Stables is a Hotel in Kandy set in an ancient Colonial-period bungalow with wide views over the city’s green hills. From here, you are within easy reach of Kandy City Center and the Temple of Tooth Relic, with Kandy Railway Station also close by for practical arrivals and onward travel. The setting feels calm, but the location keeps you connected to the city’s everyday rhythm. Inside, air-conditioned rooms are finished with hardwood floors and warm tones, creating a restful place to return to after a day out in Kandy. Each room includes a seating area, a personal safe, a mini-bar, and a flat-screen TV, while bathrooms come with bathrobes, free toiletries, and a hairdryer. Some stays may also include a balcony or terrace, depending on availability, giving you a quieter way to take in the outlook.
Time here moves at an easy pace. The outdoor pool offers a simple pause between outings, with sun loungers nearby for lingering over a book or a slow afternoon. A library adds to the relaxed feel, while the 24-hour front desk and laundry service help keep the stay smooth. If you need help planning the rest of your time, the tour desk can arrange travel details, and room service gives you a comfortable fallback when you want to stay in. The Green Room restaurant serves Sri Lankan, Thai, and Continental cuisine, so dining stays close to home without feeling repetitive.
Around the property, the mood stays peaceful and practical rather than performative. Parking, Internet, transportation support, and accessibility features help the stay work well for different kinds of trips. The Elephant Stables feels memorable for its historic setting, thoughtful comfort, and the way it lets you experience Kandy with a little more space to unwind.

Positive:
Beautiful location with a good view over the city with a sufficient pool and nice nature around, although a bit far from the town centre. The rooms are totally comfortable and have a lot of details. The staff is beyond friendly, very personal and always present to help one out. The food is very good and can be easily personalized. Small and quaint hotel that just feels safe and personal.
Negative:
In the end, I am very torn about this place. The buildings and grounds are pretty, but much smaller than they seem online. There aren't any grounds or gardens and also the pool is much smaller than thought. All in all, the common areas need a little bit of love and seem rather run-down in some places. The pool is not heated and a little dirty in some places. While there are many great places to sit for food, there is a lack of general enjoyment in the garden and the big tent just looks like a huge obstacle in the nature. The room was quirky and totally sufficient, but everything seemed a bit mixed and unmatched, slightly old, forgotten and run-down. There surely is a lot of love poured into this place, but it needs to be updated and speak more one coherent design language. Since the hotel is so small, the staff can feel a bit awkward at times and more like staying at a distant family member's house. The food was good and truly nothing to complain about, both dinner and breakfast, but for the high price of 40 USD per person for one Sri Lankan dinner just not special enough. We had a similar taste for 1/3rd of that price in many other locations in Sri Lanka. You also need to pre-book the exact dinner and breakfast time in advance, which makes your own stay a little inflexible. All in all, this is a nice hotel with love in it and great hosts, but really needs to adjust its price point or renovate and include some more amenities. At its current state, there are sadly many other better alternatives in Kandy.
Summary: Great Hotel but not for this Price

Positive:
Unique lovely old property. Staff were wonderful and extremely attentive. We loved the location but it is not that central to everything so some people might find this a negative factor. Breakfast was amazing!!
Negative:
No power points on the bathroom and very few in the room. Had to plug in to where the bedside lamp is and kneel on a pillow to blow dry my hair. Bedside lamp kept cutting in and out then noticed the wires were exposed. Lamp way to big for the bedside table so I removed it and solved three problems at once :). Very minor issues and would not effect my recommendation to stay.
Summary: A great experience at an exceptional property.

We had a fabulous one night stay here that could not be faulted. The staff and location were superb and the food was fantastic. We had dinner in the garden which was delicious and our breakfast was the best we had in Sri Lanka!! We spent the evening watching the sunset and the bats fly through the trees
Summary: Fantastic one night stay. Staff exceptional and food delicious! Really great stop to recharge before our drive back sout

Location in the hill above busy Kandy, secluded and peaceful. The staff were friendly and attentive . Special mention to the wonderful chef who took our meal order daily to shop for fresh produce, and then delivered excellent dishes probably the best we had in ShriLanka.

A sanctuary away from Kandy city with amazing views, interesting history, and delicious food, however without a doubt the highlight of our stay was the amazing hospitality provided by Bandara, Madhusanka and everyone at the bungalow.

Positive:
Superb view across the valley: fantastic food - we particularly enjoyed the hoppers but the curries were also lovely. Very friendly and helpful staff. We stayed in the tent which was a superb experience.
Negative:
Nothing at all. If you stay in the tent and are a light sleeper bring earplugs as the wildlife are quite noisy.
