Hotel Le Fontanelle Reviews
A genuinely 5/5 experience! A beautiful and very well maintained property. More than enough facilities to enjoy your time without going offsite. Incredibly attentive and helpful team at the front desk (a shout out to Mattia for the cycling itinerary he put together for us) and restaurant. Top quality ingredients for the breakfast, and what a view for dinner!
Beautiful setting, but nowhere near a five-star experience Le Fontanelle is simply not a five-star hotel. Based on our stay, I would place it closer to a three-star, possibly a four-star property. This was part of a two-week trip through Tuscany, during which we stayed at two other five-star hotels. Le Fontanelle paled in comparison with both, making the gap between its positioning and the actual experience especially clear. The rooms, linen and bedding are thoroughly average, and a “double” bed is simply two single beds pushed together. There was no coffee machine in the room. More broadly, the hotel feels dated and would benefit from a substantial upgrade. There are plenty of ways to renovate it sensitively while preserving its character, but in its current condition it feels more like an ordinary hotel than a genuine Tuscan luxury experience. Our bathtub was also clogged. We asked the hotel to fix it and were told that this had been done, but the water still would not drain properly. We chose not to pursue it further. We also found only 1-2 small cartons of warm water in the room, which, to be fair, was replaced each day. When we asked for a bottle of cold water, we were told to call the bar and that, of course, we would be charged for it. The pricing throughout feels a bit exploitative. The hotel, for example, charges €20 per bike per hour to use its bicycles. Items from the à la carte breakfast menu are charged extra, while a simple limoncello at the rather mediocre
The photos might hint at the quality of the property but don’t really do it justice. The sweeping easterly, vineyard views across to Monti-in-Chianti and up to Brolio are really mesmerizing. Grounds were well kept. Breakfast had the usual Italian selection of good fruits, grains, meats, breads, and sweets. Coupled with a limited menu of ala carte items and rich cappuccinos! Our suite was located about .25mi south of the main building. We enjoyed the walk multiple times per day but grandma might not. The room was nicely appointed with a living room, large bedroom, closet space and two sink bathroom. Stocked mini-fridge and cof/tea selections. Each room had its own outdoor area with a table/chaise to enjoy with coffee or after the pool. The out door pool is not heated (indoor pool is) but very comfortable on the 90 degree days we spent there. Pool service isn’t quite the same as some resorts, as you would go to the bar to order food/beverage and they’d bring it out to your chair setup. A good selection of menu items are available to choose from. Restaurants on site were excellent. Had the Bistecca at Tuscanio and it was perfection while LaColonna’s carpaccio and fusilli dish were both a treat. Staff was friendly though a bit harried. Seemed like they just needed a few more bodies around to smooth out the place. Ilaria at the front desk was really outstanding with her command and knowledge. While Marcella really made the pool with her wry smile and daily daiquiri selection.
